Is My CBD Oil Working?

It can be hard to remain cool and composed even during the best of times- and it’s safe to say that these aren’t exactly the best of times.

So you’ve incorporated CBD into your daily wellness routine, and you’re feeling good about it. You might have even found the perfect time of day to take your CBD dose, and you’re noticing that you feel a lot more…zen- especially when a stressful email comes in, or you have an annoying conversation with a family member.

But while there is a lot we do know about CBD, researchers are still learning more and more about CBD every day, which can be kind of confusing if you’re new to the world of CBD.

One of the questions we hear frequently in this space is: “How do I know if my CBD is working??”

So, let’s unpack that…

First of All; Does CBD Oil Work?

The term “work” is a bit subjective, but if you’re wanting to know whether or not CBD does all of the things that the hemp industry claims, the answer is: yeah it does! But, while the short answer is a resounding yes, there’s a little more to the story than that.

“The most benefit I have seen as a physician is in treating sleep disorders, anxiety, and pain. Many people report a definite response when it comes to anxiety,” Donald Levy, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says in this article

Unfortunately, there isn’t much clinical research available when it comes to CBD because- up until very recently- it was illegal to sell CBD products that contained any amount of THC. After the Farm Bill was passed though, hemp farmers were legally allowed to grow organic hemp and produce full-spectrum CBD oil– As long as it contains less than 0.3% THC.

We’re seeing a sharp uptick in studies being performed, and more and more doctors are leaning on CBD products as a healthier substitute to pharmaceutical drugs. As a result, there is substantial evidence to show how CBD can help improve sleep issues, chronic pain, menstrual cramps, and anxiety

It’s important to know what you’re buying, though. Full-spectrum CBD oil is proven to help with inflammation, pain and anxiety, but if you’re not buying high quality CBD oil, you’re not going to experience the same results.

We know that CBD is capable of alleviating a string of afflictions, but if you’re expecting your life to magically change overnight after one dose of CBD, it might be time to adjust your expectations.

Do You Feel Like Your CBD Isn’t Working

If you’ve been diligent about taking your CBD, but don’t feel like it’s doing anything, it might be easy to think, “Well, I tried CBD, but it didn’t do anything,” or wonder “Is my CBD oil working??

If you’ve tried CBD products without any results, you’re not the only one- but that doesn’t mean that CBD doesn’t work! Don’t be frustrated, or worse- give up completely!

Sometimes, all it takes is a few simple adjustments to get you right where you want to be. If you don’t know if your CBD is working, or you aren’t achieving the results you were hoping for, consider the following:

Make Sure Your CBD Oil is Full-Spectrum

Since all of our bodies are unique, and react in different ways to different products, some experimenting might be necessary to find the right CBD products to fit your needs. Make sure that your CBD oil is full-spectrum

What does that mean? Full-spectrum refers to the oil’s cannabinoid profile; aka the important compounds have been preserved, and your CBD contains all the therapeutic cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that grow naturally in hemp.

Researchers recently discovered that full spectrum CBD yields more benefits than CBD isolate does. This is because all the cannabinoids (like CBD and THC) are synergistic, meaning they do a better job when others are present. To fully reap the benefits of CBD, look for full-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD oil.

Try Taking Your CBD a Different Way

If you started out by eating CBD gummies, or vaping CBD, you may want to switch up the way you are consuming your CBD. For example, if you have been eating CBD gummies, they are having to go through your digestive tract before they can be absorbed, so the amount of CBD that ends up in your system may be lower than you realize.

Adjust Your CBD Dosage

Just like the delivery method may be affecting whether or not your CBD oil is “working”, the amount you’re taking will be a factor in this as well.

When it comes to finding the perfect CBD dosage, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. The amount that works best for you might be totally different for someone else. The main rule of thumb? Start low and go slow. The general recommendation is this:

  • When you’re first starting out, try taking 5-10 drops of your CBD oil. Wait until after the CBD is leaving your system before taking a higher dose. You’ll usually be able to tell after 4 hours if your CBD is working, or not. Then you can adjust your dose and try again!

Give CBD Time to Build Up in Your System

CBD is similar to any other supplement in the way that you don’t just take a dose, and expect to see results instantly. Just like with vitamin C, collagen powder or a bottle of probiotics, CBD takes time to build up in your system.

Finding your own, personal (perfect) CBD dosage requires a certain level of commitment and patience if you want to uncover the amazing long-term effects. Patience is key, and while it can be frustrating to keep trying with no results, you’ll be super grateful that you didn’t give up in the long run.

If you’re committed to consistent CBD use, but just need a little help getting started, try keeping a CBD journal to keep yourself accountable and track your progress!

We know that it can be tricky business getting your CBD dosage just right, so if you’re struggling to tell whether or not your CBD is working, talk to your healthcare professional to get their input. They’ll be able to help you pinpoint any external factors that are impacting your CBD dosing, and will be able to monitor your progress with you.
